Karen Scott-Gallagher, Risk, Business Continuity & Insurance Advisor, Kingston University.

Karen joined the University in 2016 and is based in the Governance & Compliance Directorate. Her role involves advising staff and students on all aspects of insurance from information about claims to guidance on the risks associated with travel. Managing and renewing the University insurance portfolio, assisting with risk registers and business continuity planning.

Karen previously worked for a large insurer as a graduate trainee, completing her ACII and becoming an inspector, the role involved visiting brokers, building relationships and supporting them in developing their book of business with the insurer. She then moved into insurance broking, working in varied brokerages from small businesses to larger brokers with significant clients. She has dealt with a range of business from the personal such as motor and home to large commercial risks and charities. Some of her clients were high profile charities, which often presented some interesting insurance risks – she once insured a polar bear puppet the size of a double decker bus, that attended protests.

A major part of the role at Kingston is advising on travel and ensuring appropriate risk assessments are in place, providing information on the associated risks at particular destinations and offering advice on how to mitigate potential risks. Alongside colleagues in H&S and IT we have built a system to facilitate risk assessment, booking of travel and requests for travel insurance. The system collects relevant travel information, supporting our due diligence ensures we know where staff are and can contact them, providing support in an emergency.

Normally in her spare time Karen likes to travel, but since the pandemic she has been discovering her local area on daily walks, recently finding a plague that commemorated the old GCHQ base in Ruislip!
